Why Verignon?
Verignon is a very small village in Provence. If you don't pay attention for a moment, you'll pass it by. There are only 10-20 inhabitants and a handful of houses.
You will find the village in the Var region of France, in Provence. Verignon is located approximately 45 minutes from the Mediterranean coast, 20 minutes from Lac de Sainte Croix and 20 minutes from the Gorges du Verdon.
Verignon itself does not have much to offer visitors. However, the surrounding nature and environment is overwhelmingly beautiful! Nature lovers and outdoor sports enthusiasts can indulge themselves here.
Tip 1. Take a walk to the Notre-Dame-de-Liesse chapel
The chapel Notre-Dame de Liesse is situated at 991 m above sea level in the woods between Aups and Verignon. A lady of the Blacas family came here to await the arrival of her son from the Crusades and vowed to build a chapel as soon as he returned safely. He returned and the chapel was built as a testimony to the “liesse” of the family.
It is a nice walk to get to the chapel, but the peace and the view are overwhelming. You can also combine a walk to the chapel Notre-Dame-de-Liesse with the other chapel Saint Priest: here you will find the route.
Tip 2. Admire the Château de Verignon
Net buiten het dorp staat een imposant kasteel, wat enkel vanaf de doorgaande weg is te aanschouwen. Het kasteel is privé bezit en niet toegankelijk voor het publiek.
The current castle was built at the beginning of the 18th century. Previously, a castle stood a little further away. However, this was abandoned after the construction of the new castle was completed. Only a few stone constructions remain.
Tip 3. Walk to the Saint Priest chapel
The other chapel in Verignon is the Saint Priest, built in 1098. It is located at an altitude of 1,066 km on the same mountain range as the Notre-Dame de Liesse. This chapel is located in a flatter area, surrounded by green fields and trees. The ravages of time have affected the chapel, which only adds to its charm.
The chapel can also be visited via a walk through the woods. You can also combine a walk to the Saint Priest chapel with the other chapel Notre-Dame-de-Liesse: here you will find the route.
Tip 4. Dive into the woods on a mountain bike
Are you exploring the forests around Verignon by mountain bike? These dense forests are full of beautiful holm oaks and there are still chapels hidden here and there. You will discover them both with this route.
On this route you will cover 16.5 kilometers by mountain bike. You can also do it on foot. Then it will take you about 5 hours and 30 minutes.
I have not done this route before, but it seems to be overwhelmingly beautiful!
Top 5. Visit the Gorges du Verdon
Just 20 minutes away from Verignon you will find the Gorges du Verdon. This is an overwhelming gorge with gigantic rock formations and a river in the middle. It is an ideal area for nature and sports lovers. For example, you can:
- Paddling down the Gorges du Verdon in a canoe;
- Bungee jumping 182 meters down;
- Take short walks or long hikes;
- Spotting griffon vultures;
- Enjoy touring by car or motorbike;
- Taking beautiful photos;
- Rafting over the white water;
- Or get into the water yourself with canyoning.

Tip 6. Cool off in the Lac de Sainte Croix
At a 20 minute drive from Verignon you will find the Lac de Sainte Croix. This clear blue reservoir has many cozy beaches where you can go into the water.
The locals often park their car somewhere at the top of the slope and then wander down the steep paths. However, there are also some places where you can easily drive down with the car and park close to the water. For example here and here. NB! Most parking spaces have a maximum height of 2.10 metres for cars/campers.
Tip 7. Visit the farmers' market in Aups
In nearby Aups, a farmers market takes place twice a week, on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. At the market, you will find a wide range of fresh & local produce, as well as non-food products. Besides this market, it is great fun to wander through the narrow streets of Aups, looking for all the fountains. Read more about Aups and discover our 7 tips for your visit.
